Identification made through the use of the Russian AFIS technology allowed the police of Belgrade to take a step closer to solving one of the first mafia-related murders ever committed on the streets of Belgrade.

Dragan Radisic, a police inspector, was brutally killed 20 years ago. The inspector was found shot on February 1, 1996, in an entrance hall of his house. Latent prints found at the scene of the murder were forwarded to the Identification Division but were not identified despite all the efforts of the examiners. This crime remained unsolved for many years.

Recently, these latents were identified with fingerprints appearing on a fingerprint card for an Albanian citizen who had been arrested for illegal foreign exchange. This identification made possible owing to the use of the AFIS designed by PAPILLON for the needs of the law-enforcement and border police forces of Serbia. It was established that this individual has been hiding in the Middle East during the last years. It is reported now that the Police of Belgrade is going to initiate the process of his extradition.

It is also reported that latent prints detected on the scene of the triple homicide committed in 2000 in New Belgrade were also identified. The use of the AFIS caused the murderer to be identified and brought to justice.
