Description
Part of the PAPILLON biometric identification product line, PAPILLON FILTER allows real-time automatic identification against AFIS databases, thereby expanding the use of automated fingerprint and palmprint record collections.
With PAPILLON FILTER, an identity check does not involve all 10 fingers. Only one or two finger impressions are captured with a PAPILLON fingerprint scanner being a MANDATORY component of the system. The impressions are digitized and submitted to the AFIS for searches against fileprints.
All express ID check calls are of top priority for the AFIS. With the search completed, a list of ALL tenprints found in the AFIS database as mates is automatically produced and returned to the requester, each record containing demographic information and mugshots (if any).
The system delivers also an ID check in a 1-1 (authentication mode) environment, when together with the individual’s biometrics his demographic data are also specified.
The PAPILLON FILTER terminal or station can simultaneously communicate with several AFIS databases enabling parallel search of these databases.
Depending upon its mission, the system can initiate search against the entire AFIS database as well as against its particular sections (e.g. files of “hot” prints belonging to subjects put on the national or local wanted lists, migration array, etc.).

Operating Modes
Depending upon functional AFISs as well as upon accessibility of communication channels, environment and service conditions, the PAPILLON FILTER workstations, both stationary and portable, are capable of functioning in terminal and autonomous modes.
The terminal mode demands the availability of a permanent IP-communication with the AFIS site through dial-up or dedicated telephone lines for stationary applications, and GSM/CDMA wireless communication as well as synchronized satellite channel for portable stations.
The autonomous mode is used if connectivity for the AFIS search is unavailable. This implies an internal database maintained on the workstation. Due to the use of only index data not fingerprint images for matching, these internal databases can accumulate hundreds of thousands of records.

Checking Time
The ID check period involves the time needed for the AFIS to process the inquiry and the time for data transmission.
PAPILLON Technical Solutions To Reduce Checking Time
- Adoption of blade-technology to gain more processing power
- Multiloop data processing system within the AFIS
- Allocation of an ad hoc server for express ID checks
- Ability to create arrays of “hot” prints within the AFIS
- Optimization of distributed computing
The express ID servers and matchers are configured so that the entire procedure takes 1-3 minutes – in about the time it takes normally to inspect a person's ID papers.

Usable Livescan Devices
PAPILLON FILTER can utilize any fingerprint livescan device included into the PAPILLON scanner family.
To perform express ID checks, it will suffice to equip the workstation with a DS-21 fingerprint scanner enabling direct scanning of a single flat fingerprint and having a compact yet lightweight design. Those installations that equipped with DS-30N (DS-30Nν) or DS-45 (DS-45M) are capable of functioning as both express ID check and booking workstations enabling creation of electronic tenprint cards and their transfer to the AFIS.
